Dallas Wings guard DiJonai Carrington recently went out of her way to clarify something about herself, in light of the public relationship she has with fellow WNBA player NaLyssa Smith.
In one of the recent episodes of Angel Reese’s podcast “Unapologetically Angel,” DoJonai Carrington clarified that despite being in a relationship with fellow WNBA player NaLyssa Smith, she is not gay.
“No. I’m not even like into girls,” Carrington said. “[Guys even slide me DMs] saying it is a waste. Like, you know, ‘You’re too pretty. It’s a waste to be [with a girl].’ I’m not gay, I just like being with Lyss”
DiJonai Carrington and NaLyssa Smith’s relationship began during their time at Baylor University, where they played together on the women’s basketball team. Their bond grew stronger as they supported each other both on and off the court.
Carrington and Smith’s relationship became more public during their time in the WNBA. Carrington, who plays for the Dallas Wings, and Smith have been open about their relationship on social media. They have shared numerous moments of their journey together, including celebrating birthdays and anniversaries, which has endeared them to fans.

With recent developments in the league, Carrington and Smith have now become teammates at Wings. NaLyssa Smith was traded to the Dallas Wings as part of a four-team deal involving the Connecticut Sun, Phoenix Mercury, and Indiana Fever.

The Wings acquired Smith from the Fever, along with DiJonai Carrington and Tyasha Harris from the Sun, the reserved rights of Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and the No. 12 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft from the Mercury, and future pick swaps.
DiJonai Carrington Agrees With Angel Reese Over Salary Comment
In the same podcast episode, DiJonai Carrington and Angel Reese also talked about the pay issue within the WNBA. Angel Reese then cited the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement and made a strong statement about the ongoing issue of the salary of WNBA players: that they might come to a point where players would sit out games.
“Yeah, that’s a possibility,” said Carrington in agreement. “For real, it was kind of a possibility on the last one. But now, just with the leverage that we have right now. It’s just a time where women’s basketball is going crazy. It’s gonna be a time next year. But we deserve it.”

During the 2024 season, DiJonai Carrington averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Carrington’s performance earned her the Kia WNBA Most Improved Player award and a spot on the WNBA All-Defensive First Team.
