Donald Trump’s presidency was one marked by both progress and polarization. From deeply rooted racial issues to polarizing religious debates, his time in office sparked intense national discourse and widespread controversy.
While some public figures, including celebrities and athletes, voiced support for Trump, others used their platforms to speak out against him. One of the most vocal among them was Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry. Known for his dominance on the basketball court, Curry has also stepped into the spotlight for his outspoken views on social and political issues.
In 2022, former NBA player Etan Thomas—who played alongside legends like Michael Jordan—interviewed Curry for his book Police Brutality and White Supremacy: The Fight Against American Traditions. The book explored the intersections of racism, religion, and power in America. Thomas shared quotes from Curry and other prominent voices on social media, thanking them for their bravery in speaking out against hypocrisy and injustice. He specifically praised “Black Christians Pastor John K. Jenkins, Bishop Talbert Swan, Chris Broussard, & Stephen Curry” for not hesitating to challenge the support many white evangelicals showed for Trump.

In the interview, Curry was candid about his opposition to Trump, stating that he could never support someone whose actions and values contradicted his Christian faith. “Trump doesn’t have the ideals that I have, that I root my entire belief system on as a Christian, so how could I support him?” said Curry. “I can’t support hate, racism, and bigotry. He hasn’t shown to even attempt to exhibit anything close to Christian values, so just from that perspective alone, I couldn’t support him.”

Stephen Curry’s political alignment creates history
Curry’s stance wasn’t just talk—it made history. After the Warriors won the NBA championship in 2017, they received the traditional invitation to the White House. But Curry made headlines by publicly declining the invitation, becoming the first pro athlete to openly reject a Trump White House visit. His refusal sparked national conversation and inspired other athletes to take similar stands.
