Joel Embiid is the Philadelphia 76ers’ number one guy. Is Paul George no. 2? That is up for debate now as PG’s former teammate suggests because of the rise of Tyrese Maxey.
George returned to action in 116-118 loss to the Phoenix Suns after missing the first five games due to an offseason injury. It was a relatively successful game for him, scoring 15 points, made 5 rebounds, and four assists.
He was supposed to play limited minutes but he was on the floor for 31, including the last play to win the game for his team. He went iso again Grayson Allen just inside the arc but missed.
PG made shots like that before, there is even one against the Sixers from before. Nurse must have chosen him to take the last shot.
However, for Patrick Beverley, PG should have given the ball to Maxey instead.
“PG my brother. Love him to death. But Maxey gotta have that last shot. I know it’s hierarchy and I respect it, on his bday and a 30 point night🏀🏀 @PatBevPod,” he wrote on X.
Maxey was indeed hot in the game, concluding it with 32 points. The young guard has been consistent for the Sixers in the absence of George and Embiid.
Paul George thinks it was a boneheadead play
PG himself thinks he made the wrong decision on that last play. But it was not about who should take it.
He thinks he made a bad evaluation of the scenario and could have opted for a better shot instead of forcing one on the perimeter.
“I thought we were down one. I thought when KD made that lay-up, that put them up one,” he told reporters after the game.
“Otherwise, go for the 3. Try to win the game as opposed to going for two to tie the game. So, after watching it, another bonehead play. Again in that situation, why not go for the win.”
George and the Sixers, now 1-5, will return to action on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers.
