The ultimate goal for the Los Angeles Lakers has always been and always will be winning the Larry O’Brien trophy. Even now that one of their stars, LeBron James, is 40 years old, they still tried to form a team that could potentially contend for the title. However, with the roster moves they’ve made recently, that dream might not come true in the 2024-25 NBA season.
In a clip from “KG Certified” posted on Thursday, former star Kevin Garnett made a bold prediction about the Lakers. According to the big man who won the 2008 championship with the Boston Celtics, the team will win the title in 2028. KG’s reason is that Los Angeles will host the Summer Olympics that year.

“Lakers winning in ’28,” Garnett said. “Remember I said that. Mark this down. Remember I said it, you know why? Going into the Olympics, LA is finna be the Hope Diamond, my dude. We should take a picture now, right now in ’25. Because in ’28, this is all going to look like something new and something different.
“I watched how Tokyo, I watched how other countries were getting ready for the Olympics or getting ready for world renowned events and they glossed up their city. I’m anticipating LA to do the same thing.
File this away, come back in 2028 👀✍️

Garnett even daydreamed about seeing Luka Doncic winning the NBA championship and representing his country, Slovenia, in the Olympics.
“Can you imagine when Luka plays in ’28 and then Slovenia makes the Olympics, how that whole thing is gonna be with him in LA?”
The squad’s roster isn’t strong enough to compete with the league’s best team this season. But with some time and roster-improvement efforts, KG’s forecast may come true.
The Lakers eyeing a Warriors forward to pair with James and Doncic

The Lakers’ goal after acquiring Doncic via a blockbuster deal is to surround him with decent help. With James’ age, it’s obvious that he won’t be part of the organization’s future with the 6-foot-6 guard. One player who could be under Los Angeles’ radar is Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga’s $7 million contract with the Warriors will expire after this season. While the franchise’s owner, Joe Lacob, wants the 6-foot-8 forward to stay with the team, the front office hasn’t done anything to give him a contract extension.
This gives Rob Pelinka and the rest of the front office to target the versatile forward. In 32 games this season, he’s averaged some of the best numbers of his career. Kuminga is averaging 16.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
