The Golden State Warriors are still dealing with the fallout caused by Klay Thompson’s departure from the team. While everyone saw the writing on the wall after his disappointing performance last season, the separation was still painful for everyone who loved watching Warriors basketball in the past decade.
Stephen Curry has already sent out an emotional message to pay tribute to his on-court partnership with Thompson, and Draymond Green also said his piece about his teammates’ departure. The three understand that not everything will be the same after the Dubs effectively let Klay walk away for the sake of the championship.
However, it seems like Klay isn’t the only one who will be out the door for the Warriors if rumors are to be believed. After news of Klay’s sign-and-trade deal was finalized, multiple people immediately suggested that Golden State start fresh and do away with Green as well.
Analysts and fans suggest that the Golden State Warriors trade Draymond Green for better resources
People’s minds immediately went to Draymond Green’s future for one obvious reason: what’s stopping the Dubs from dealing Draymond away if they’re more than ready to do away with Klay for the sake of competitiveness?
Matt Hladik of The Spun wrote about the rising opinion among fans and analysts when it comes to Dray’s future with the Dubs, with Bill Simmons being the most vocal:
“Trade Draymond. Right now is the time. Gotta do it,” Simmons said, via Basketball Network. “You gotta rip the band-aid off and talk Steph into it. We have to explain it to him that we’re not gonna be good for one year, and we’ll make it up to you.”
Simmons went on to suggest trading Green to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he could play with close friend LeBron James, in exchange for Rui Hachimura, Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2029 first-round pick.
Such a proposed trade would do well for all parties involved. Hachimura is a serviceable player who would thrive under Steve Kerr’s system. The Japanese forward averaged 13.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists a game last season for the Purple and Gold.
Green may be a minor upgrade compared to Rui, but the Lakers need veteran leadership and playoff experience to make a serious run for the title. Draymond’s gritty approach would complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis well.
Simmons is just one of many people who think the Golden State Warriors should start with a fresh slate if they want Curry to win one more chip with the Dubs. However, no one will know what will happen until the season begins in earnest.
