Golden State Warriors news: There’s no denying that Anthony Edwards is one of the most important players on the Team USA roster heading into the Olympics. National team head coach Steve Kerr is well aware of this fact as he looks to lead his team to a gold-medal finish in the prestigious international tournament.
The fact that Edwards is even part of Team USA’s 12-man squad is a testament to how he’s been able to establish himself as one of the top players in the game today. As it turns out, this was not something Kerr saw coming.
Golden State Warriors News: Steve Kerr Was Not Impressed By Anthony Edwards
The Warriors actually had a shot at scooping Edwards up during the 2020 NBA Draft. The Minnesota Timberwolves, however, decided to use their first overall pick on the Georgia standout as James Wiseman fell to the Warriors at the No. 2 spot.
Edwards worked out for Kerr and his coaching staff as part of the pre-draft process. Apparently, Kerr wasn’t exactly blown away by the 6-foot-4 shooting guard.
“The first impression was it was hard to tell whether he was going to be good or not because he was just so raw,” Kerr told Logan Murdock of The Ringer. “He was so young, and he was full of energy, which we loved, but we just worried about: Was he going to be a worker? Because he didn’t know anything.”
According to Edwards’ business manager Justin Holland, coach Kerr delivered a savage message to Edwards after watching the young man work out for his squad. The Warriors shot-caller did not hold back.
“He was like, ‘Imagine everybody walking through the door has $50 million,’” Holland recalls Kerr saying. “‘Because the way you’re working out, you’re not the type of guy to give $50 million to.’”
For what it’s worth, Edwards recently put pen to paper on a five-year extension with the Wolves worth a whopping $204 million. Kerr did not see that coming either.
