After months of speculation, Klay Thompson has signed up with the Dallas Mavericks. Turns out, he and Draymond Green had a good reason to be annoyed at the Golden State Warriors’ front office for a decision they made years ago.
In a surprising move, Thompson has chosen to join Dallas over the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency. The decision came after an intimate dinner meeting in California, where the Splash Brother discussed his future with Mavericks executive Michael Finley.

Despite his deep roots with the Dubs, the All-Star shooter felt it was time for a fresh start. Factors such as the Mavericks’ promising young core, led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, as well as his perceived lack of appreciation from the Warriors organization, contributed to his choice.
The meeting with Finley allowed Thompson to gain valuable insights into the Mavericks’ culture and environment, which ultimately tipped the scales in Dallas’ favor. While the Lakers offered a more lucrative contract, the former Warriors star prioritized the opportunity to win another championship, which he believes the Mavericks can provide.
The decision to part ways with Golden State, a team he helped lead to multiple titles, was not an easy one for Thompson. However, he is eager to embark on this new chapter and bring his championship pedigree to the Mavericks as they strive for NBA glory.

After signing with the Mavericks, there were several reports that detailed when Thompson’s dissatisfaction with the Warriors started. In an article posted on NBC Sports, Joaquin Ruiz reported the exact incident that got the ball rolling for the Splash Brother.
“Thompson and longtime Warriors teammate Draymond Green reportedly were not thrilled about the team’s decision to extend both guard Jordan Poole and forward Andrew Wiggins in the summer of ’22, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Kendra Andrews reported in a feature story Wednesday.
“The Warriors prioritized extending [Jordan] Poole — for four years and $140 million — and young swingman Andrew Wiggins (four years, $109 million) over Thompson and Green the summer after they won a championship, which didn’t sit well with either of the two veterans, sources said,” Shelburne and Andrews wrote.
Looking back in hindsight, both Wiggins and Poole didn’t pan that well for GSW. The former has regressed during his time in the Bay while the latter got traded to the Washington Wizards after being involved in a altercation with Green.

With Thompson playing in Dallas, the Warriors’ chance of winning a ring has substantially gone down. Hopefully, the front office can rectify their past mistakes to make the most out of All-Star guard Stephen Curry‘s championship window.
