Despite the fact that it had been a long time coming for the Golden State Warriors, officially losing Klay Thompson is still a hard pill to swallow for Dub Nation. As they always say, however, the NBA is a business and there’s just no room for too much emotion in this game.
This is exactly why the Warriors have wasted no time replacing Thompson with a new recruit via free agency. This comes in the form of 6-foot-2 combo guard De’Anthony Melton, who has reportedly agreed to a single-season deal with Golden State.
Golden State Warriors Sign De’Anthony Melton

Renowned NBA insider Shams Charania reported shortly after the Thompson news broke that the Warriors have agreed to a deal with Melton:
“Free agent De’Anthony Melton plans to sign a one-year, $12.8 million deal with the Golden State Warriors, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium,” Shams reported on X, formerly Twitter.
Melton, who averaged a career-best 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.6 steals in his second season with the Philadelphia 76ers last term, is now set to join the Warriors on a short-term deal. The assumption here is that Golden State will want to see what Melton can bring to the team before potentially signing him to a lengthier deal.
Melton is obviously no star, but he did knock down a career-high 2.0 triples per game last season as Philly’s starting two-guard, so he should be able to fill some of the void Thompson has left.

The Warriors are far from done, though, as they look to retool their roster ahead of the new season. Expect more moves from Golden State in the coming days.
