It’s a sad day for the Golden State Warriors. While it is by no means official, it now appears that the Klay Thompson ship has already sailed.
At this point, it has become abundantly clear that the five-time All-Star has already played his final game for the Dubs. This is without a doubt a hard pill to swallow for Warriors fans everywhere.
Golden State Warriors News: Klay Thompson on His Way Out
NBA insiders Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic published a comprehensive report on Saturday about Thompson’s looming departure. Apparently, contract negotiations have completely broken down between Klay and the Warriors, which has now led to the five-time All-Star’s imminent exit:
“The Golden State Warriors are preparing to lose four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson in free agency, an expected parting of ways between a legendary dynasty and one of its legacy players, league sources told The Athletic,”
“Thompson and the Warriors have had close to no communication since the negotiating period opened for incumbent free agents nearly two weeks ago and no offer has been made, team and league sources said. … The five-time All-Star guard is determined to find a new home elsewhere for his 14th NBA season and beyond, with both sides believing their 13-year run together is over, league sources said.” read the report.
That’s just brutal.
Warriors Willing to Help Klay Thompson Find New Team
The Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks are the two teams that appear to have emerged as the front-runners to land Thompson in free agency. The Los Angeles Clippers are another team that is reportedly in the mix.
For their part, the Warriors are reportedly willing to help Thompson find his next team:
“The Warriors are open to participating in a sign-and-trade with Thompson to aid in his earning potential, those sources said,” read the report.
This move would also benefit Golden State in that they could potentially get something in exchange for their soon-to-be former superstar shooting guard as opposed to losing him for nothing in free agency.
