In a recent interview with Malika Andrews, and Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry, there was a reflection on the important role he played on not only his team but how he changed the dynamic of how the game is played today. It is no secret that offenses around the NBA are changing their game plans, and a lot more threes are being shot in today’s game. Steph Curry will go down in history as one of the greats, and in this one-on-one interview, he reflected on his career, his peers, and his future acknowledging that he will one day have to hang up the sneakers and leave the ball on the court.
The Steph Curry, Lebron James, and Kevin Durant Era
The Golden State Warriors point guard was asked:
“What does it mean to you to have your own era defined by you, Lebron James and Kevin Durant?’
His answer reflected his competitive nature, stating that as he looks at it more as he gets deeper into his career, he cherishes every moment.
He answered:
“You are still in that competitive mode even though there is respect, there is still that appropriate fear that I bring to that side of him (Lebron James), that he brings to that side of me”
Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and Lebron James have been on opposite ends of each other on the court countless times. Whether it’s the Cavaliers Vs. Warriors Finals or it’s a Western Conference Playoffs series, these two gave the NBA fans countless memories to remember.
He also stated there was a lot of pettiness and resentment on the court when these 3 battled against one another, but as time goes on, he understands what it takes to be great and the hard work that needs to be put in. It makes him respect them and the work they put in that much more.
Will Steph Curry Ever Play With Lebron James?
Steph did win a gold medal on Team USA with Lebron James and Malika asked:
“Is there a chance we will ever see it in the NBA?”
He responded:
“Probably not, but the ‘what ifs’ and all that type of stuff, we’ll leave that for whatever platform people want to talk about it”
Steph Curry did state in the past and in this interview that he does not see a future with him playing alongside Lebron James. James did say he would one day like to play with Curry, but Curry quickly shut it down. This could be a reaction to being rivals on the court for so long, and teaming up would reflect poorly on their careers. Teams have tried to stack teams in the past, and news media and fans across the world gave negative feedback on these moves, so it’s safe to say these two will retire before teaming up is ever an option.
Retirement is on the horizon for the Warrior’s Point Guard
This is year 16 for the star point guard, and Father Time remains undefeated in every professional sport. That is not to say that his play is declining. He was still one of the top point guards in the league and is the main dynamic that makes the Warriors compete in the West. When you look back at Steph Curry’s career, he has broken 3-point records, won championships, has been in countless all-star games, and single-handedly changed how new young players play the game of basketball today. A lot more 3-pointers are being shot, from the logo shots, and players are learning to move off the ball to create their own shots from the perimeter.
Malika Andrews asked:
“How much thought do you put into how much longer you want to play?”
He responded:
“More than I probably have before, I think it’s okay to accept and acknowledge that the end is near at whatever point, but only because it allows you to enjoy what is happening right now. The more you talk about it, the more you acknowledge it, It levels up the sense of urgency of the moment now”
He does acknowledge that he and Draymond Green are not in their prime anymore, and the team is finding ways to maximize their talents in their quest to win their 5th championship ring. You can watch the interview below:
Once the superstar retires, it’s going to shock the NBA world, and the legacy he leaves behind will be immeasurable. While we may have some years left to witness greatness, we need to embrace that these are the last years of this era.
