It will be a tough offseason for the Golden State Warriors as they are set to miss out on both Paul George and Klay Thompson this season.
The Dubs made a serious run for PG13 as the more productive replacement for Thompson, who struggled mightily last season. However, their hopes were dashed after the Palmdale, CA native decided to leave for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Meanwhile, the man the Dubs drafted 11th overall in 2012 is also on his way out the door. The sharpshooter is reportedly accepting offers from multiple teams interested in acquiring his services now that the team has formally declared their intent to move on from him.
The fact that neither of these players are going to play for the Warriors next season is hurting their chances of giving Stephen Curry another chip. However, that’s not the only thing affected the current situation the Dubs find themselves in this offseason.
Vegas odds for the Golden State Warriors after Paul George, Klay Thompson sagas
According to Sports Illustrated’s Peter Dewey, Vegas believes the Dubs are now less than likely to win the championship. While they’re still in the middle of the pack, many can consider this state as a death sentence to Golden State’s hopes this season.
Dewey elaborates on the situation:
Golden State’s roster has some massive questions now ahead of the 2024-25 season, and the team has seen its odds to win the title suffer in the process. The Warriors opened the offseason at +3000 to win the title next season, but that has moved to +4000 over the last two days.
Of course, things can still change if the Dubs manage to bring a capable player through free agency or trade. Finding the right player might be tough, but a well-placed trade should see them shoot up the odds table again.
Another major factor in the Golden State Warriors’ chances for success is Jonathan Kuminga’s growth as a second star. Kuminga had a terrific 2023-24 season, averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists on 55.9% shooting and 32.1% from deep. If his production keeps up with his trajectory, there’s no reason the Warriors won’t be among the favorites for the title again next year.
Until then, Warriors fans will hope that the front office has a clear idea of what they want to do with the roster.
