Over the past couple of days, the Golden State Warriors have added De’Anthony Melton and Kyle Anderson via free agency. They have not, however, found a replacement for Klay Thompson, who has decided to take his talents to the Dallas Mavericks.
This appears to have all changed on Wednesday night now that the Warriors are reportedly on the brink of agreeing a sing-and-trade deal with the Philadelphia 76ers for Buddy Hield.
Golden State Warriors News: Buddy Hield Heading to The Bay
It was NBA guru Shams Charania of The Athletic who first broke the news about Hield joining Stephen Curry to form one of the deadliest backcourts in the NBA today:
“Just In: The Golden State Warriors are in serious talks on a sign-and-trade deal to acquire Buddy Hield, league sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Warriors and 76ers have been in deep discussions, working to finalize the deal for one of the NBA’s best three-point shooters,” Shams reported on X, formerly Twitter.
Hield, who knocked down 2.6 triples per game last season with the Sixers on a 38.9-percent clip, is one of the most efficient sharpshooters in the game today. If the Warriors wanted a one-for-one replacement for Thompson, then Hield has to be the perfect choice.
At this point, the details of the deal have not yet been made public. However, the fact that it’s going to be a sign-and-trade deal means that the Warriors will need to send some assets in Philly’s direction to get this deal done.
For their part, the Sixers are looking to shed off some salary from their payroll after signing Paul George to a max deal and handing Tyrese Maxey a massive extension.
Hield pocketed $19.8 million last season, and it is clear that the Sixers just did not have much cap room available to offer the 31-year-old a contract extension.
