Fred VanVleet has become one of the Houston Rockets’ key veterans this season, and the team has a big contract decision to make this summer.

VanVleet’s current contract with the Houston Rockets has a $44.9 million option for next season. The team could simply pick up that option or negotiate a longer-term deal at a reduced annual salary.
The one-time NBA champion saw a decline in his numbers from his first regular season campaign with the Houston Rockets. VanVleet averaged 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists on 37.8 percent shooting from the field across 60 starts in 2024-25.

However, he stepped up in the postseason, averaging 18.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game on 40.0 percent shooting from the field. At 31 years old, VanVleet still has a few more good years left in his tank.
Houston Rockets News: Fred VanVleet opens up on his future with the team
If Fred VanVleet could have it his way, he would likely stay with the Houston Rockets for the rest of his NBA career because he is invested in the team’s ongoing project.

“Obviously, I put my heart and soul into this, and this is where I want to be. It’s definitely a family situation,” VanVleet said via Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.
“I’ve got a lot of love for our coaching staff, Rafael (Stone, general manager), the Fertitta family (ownership), what we set out to do when I had my free agent meeting two years ago, and we’re on that track. It was never a short-term vision. It was a long-term goal. We’re on track. We’re on schedule,” he added.
