After the tumultuous 2024-25 NBA season, Kevin Durant‘s future with the Phoenix Suns is at stake. One of the biggest questions heading into the offseason is where Durant will play next season. There have been some grumblings around the media and the Houston Rockets have emerged as the top landing spot for the two-time champion for the 2025-26 season.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported there is “mutual interest” between Durant and the Rockets heading into summer. However, Charania explained that the outcome of the 2025 playoffs for the Houston team will affect their plans to trade for KD.

“There is going to be a level of mutual interest—there has been already—with them and Kevin Durant with the Suns. Seeing how [the Rockets] do, listen if they win a couple rounds, they might be good where they’re at. If you lose early, you don’t win enough to where you want to, could you look at a guy like Kevin Durant once again this offseason?” Charania revealed.

On Wednesday’s episode of FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” former NBA player Chandler Parsons believes the Houston Rockets would turn into title contenders if they added Durant this summer.

“I think he would,” Parsons answered when asked if Durant would make the Rockets instant title contenders.

“I think it is a great fit, they are young enough and they have a great duo that wins. With Jalen Green and Sengun, he would be that awesome third option — he wouldn’t be a third option, probably be the first option. But he’d be the third guy to the Big 3.

“When you trade for Kevin Durant, this is a win-now, ‘Let’s maximize this duo we have. We already paid them, we know they’re hear with us. Let’s add one of the greatest scorers of all time, we just got a small window to win.’ I love it.”

Which other teams can trade for Durant other than the Houston Rockets?

There are a lot of other teams that could make a deal with the Suns for Durant, other than the Houston Rockets. One team would be the top-seeded team in the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With the Thunder, he’ll return to the team that honed his talents and developed him into a superstar. Many believe the potential new team KD will join this summer will be his last. With that being said, it would be a storybook ending to have him return to the Thunder.

Another team that could trade for Durant would be the New York Knicks. The Knicks have wanted to be with a player like the 15-time All-Star in the past and now’s their chance. Pairing him with Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns would instantly turn the franchise into title contenders.

However, the Houston Rockets have the upper hand over other organizations since Durant has shared a mutual interest in playing for the Texas team.
