Another day, another new WNBA record for Caitlin Clark, as the Indiana Fever star recorded a league-record 19 assists in their Wednesday game against the Dallas Wings.
In the 101-93 road loss, Clark recorded 24 points, six rebounds, and 19 assists while shooting 10-of-19 from the field. The previous single-game assists record was held by Courtney Vandersloot, who tallied 18 assists for the Chicago Sky against the Indiana Fever in a WNBA game in 2018.
“She’s going to say it means nothing,” teammate Aliyah Boston told reporters. “But I think it’s pretty cool. So, sorry.”
“I just try to set my teammates up for success. I think at times I can almost overpass. There probably could have been a few times where instead of passing that leads to a turnover I may have, I can probably shoot the ball. Especially with AB (Aliyah Boston). I’m just looking to set her up so much. My eyes are almost always on our post players,” Clark added.
Earlier this month, Caitlin Clark also became the first rookie in WNBA history to register a triple-double, as she had 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists in an 83-78 victory over the New York Liberty.
Before the game against the Dallas Wings, the former Iowa Hawkeyes star averaged 7.8 assists per game, so her numbers are about to go up after Wednesday.
Caitlin Clark eyeing to break more records
There was a lot of hype surrounding Caitlin Clark before the 2024 season, and she has lived up to it with her impressive on-court performances.
26 games into the season, the Indiana Fever star is one of the favorites to win the WNBA Rookie of the Year award alongside Angel Reese.
Next up for Caitlin Clark is trying to break the single-season assists record by a WNBA rookie. With 213 assists (and counting), Caitlin Clark is fast approaching Ticha Penichiero’s record of 225 set in 1998.
