Four-star power forward Jack McCaffery will not be playing for his father’s college basketball team, the Iowa Hawkeyes.
According to Joe Tipton of On3, McCaffery has committed to play for the Butler Bulldogs, a decision that may surprise some people since his dad, Frank, is the head coach of the Hawkeyes.
Jack McCaffery, a four-star power forward in the 2025 class, has committed to Butler and head coach Thad Matta. The 6-foot-8 rising senior out of West Senior High (IA) chose the Bulldogs over offers from Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Virginia, and others.

Jack provided his reason for choosing Butler as well:
“The reason I ultimately chose Butler was definitely because of the coaching staff,” he said. “I think coach (Maurice) Joseph and coach (Thad) Matta were both very active in recruiting me. I felt very wanted there and I appreciated that. Also, they’ve recruited me for over a year now so that kind’ve helped my decision a little bit too. I think that was a big factor for me and also the environment of Hinkle.

It was always expected that Jack wouldn’t be playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes, considering the fact that he never got an offer from the Big Ten program. That’s not to mention that he had said back in February that he wanted to “try something different, ” referring to his older brothers — Connor and Patrick — who played college basketball with the Hawkeyes (via Jeff Johnson of The Gazette).
