No one is questioning Jayson Tatum’s value as a bona fide superstar for the Boston Celtics. While he wasn’t named the 2024 Finals MVP, the C’s wouldn’t be where they are the 26-year-old’s incredible basketball talent and leadership didn’t play a huge role over the Dallas Mavericks.
While the five-time All-Star already has an impressive resume that would strengthen his entry to the Hall of Fame, he dreams of winning more and solidifying his legacy as one of the best players to step into the hardwood. Since he announced his intentions to win his first MVP award, he’s putting up one of the best seasons of his career.
His performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves was another example of Tatum’s campaign to win the regular season MVP award. While the box score tells of a dominant scoring performance, Joe Mazzulla shares a story that will endear him to the individuals voting on the award.
Jayson Tatum wants to guard Anthony Edwards during the Celtics-Timberwolves game, Joe Muzzalla shares
Joe Muzzalla isn’t one to shy away from talking up his players. He seems to be on board to get Tatum his first MVP award with how he hyped up his star forward after the C’s thrilling 118-115 win over the T’Wolves.
“{Head coach} Joe Mazzulla said Jayson Tatum said he wanted to guard Anthony Edwards tonight,” The Athletic’s Jay King posted on X after the game. Possessing such ambition a year after winning title No. 1 bodes well for both him and the Celtics.
Fans who watched the game saw Tatum among the players who took shifts guarding Ant-Man whenever he had the ball. His and the Boston’s efforts played a huge role in the young star’s off night against Boston.
To see him put on a defensive shift while also putting a near triple-double of 33 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and three steals make him the most effective cager at the Target Center.
The rest of the league will find it hard to stop Tatum when he’s locked in like this. If he continues to put up impressive performances like this, the MVP award is as good as his.
