No matter how much Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson downplays his Wednesday return to the Bay Area for a game against his former team, the Golden State Warriors, it is always going to be a big deal for Dubs fans — and to everyone who followed him and the Warriors during his 13-year tenure with the team.
Thompson immediately felt the love from the Warriors family upon arrival at Chase Center, with several captain hat-wearing Golden State employees welcoming him back to the stadium.
It was a fitting gesture from the Warriors for Thompson, who won four NBA titles and became a five-time NBA All-Star while with Golden State, which selected him 11th overall in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft.

Klay Thompson is looking to make a statement in return to old stomping grounds
Thompson surely appreciates the gesture being shown to him on the night by the Warriors, but his real focus will be on helping the Mavericks get out of a slump. A win against the Warriors this Wednesday could be a bittersweet moment for Thompson, as that would come at the expense of his old buddies. The Mavericks enter tonight’s game on the heels of back-to-back losses to the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets by a combined margin of three points.
On the season, Thompson is averaging 13.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from behind the arc for the Mavericks, who are at .500 with a 5-5 record through 10 contests in the 2024-25 NBA campaign.
