After spending the entirety of his career with the Golden State Warriors, Klay Thompson decided to leave the team this past offseason and sign with the Dallas Mavericks. Fresh off an NBA Finals run, the Mavericks were confident that they would be able to make another run with Thompson in their roster.
However, the Mavs’ hopes of winning the title this season have since perished. After trading Luka Doncic away to the LA Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis in a shocking move, the team has dealt with the injury plague, with Davis, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, PJ Washington, and Kyrie Irving forced to the sidelines.

During the latest episode of ESPN Radio’s “Thompson & Trudell Show,” Klay Thompson’s father Mychal Thompson was asked about his son’s thoughts on this season, considering that the Mavericks didn’t look much like their current iteration when he joined them.
“He thought with Luka and Kyrie there, they had a chance to get back to the finals,” MT said. “Obviously, Luka left when I told him, ‘Well, when AD’s coming, you still got a chance to get to the finals, because AD is that good.’ Then he’s hurt.”
Klay’s dad continued, “And then Gafford got hurt, then Lively got hurt. So, yeah, Klay is stuck in purgatory right now. And if they hang on to the 10th seed, that will be the story of the year in the NBA.”

Klay Thompson talks about losing Kyrie Irving for the rest of the season
Klay Thompson talked to the members of the press after the Mavericks’ 137-107 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. He discussed his feelings on losing Kyrie Irving for the rest of the season due to his ACL injury.
“That was really a gut punch, not just for the Dallas Mavericks but for basketball fans around the globe. Kyrie’s been our rock this year. It’s like an unfillable void he leaves so we gotta rally around him and we gotta play hard for him,” Thompson said.
“That one hurt, though, seeing him go down like that really sucked. I know he’s going to come back stronger, but in the moment it just really sucks for everybody.”

With Irving unfortunately out for what remains of this season, the Maverick’s season seems to be inevitably over, but there has been talk of whether or not the team should let Davis return to action after he’s back in full health.
