Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball head coach Mark Pope gave huge credit to their point guard Lamont Butler over their victory against Illinois, in a performance he was only able to describe as a “miracle.”
In a post-game interview, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope gave a huge shoutout to Lamont Butler as a pivotal player in their win against Illinois. While he may not be the top scorer or the top player for the game in stats, the coach cited how Lamont being able to play like he did as a “miracle.”
“Lamont hadn’t had a single live rep since, now it’s been three games, hadn’t had a live rep in practice, hadn’t had anything, had no contact,” Pope said. “So, going into the game two days ago, it was just a miracle that he was able to function the way he is – because you lose timing and rhythm and feel, you just do, that’s why you practice.”
“He’s just such a quick study and such a big moment guy. I felt really confident that he was going to be special and … my goodness, he was special.”
Above all his comments, Pope called Butler a “winner.”
“And he’s a winner; we said it since day one guys. We were really blessed to have a winner walk through our doors at the University of Kentucky who cares about winning.”

In a statement following the game, Lamont Butler talked about the opportunity to elevate the Kentucky team to heights it has never reached before.
“We’ve got a lot of underdogs on this team, a lot of people who’ve been doubted just through our life,” Butler said. “Growing up in basketball, not a lot of us were highly recruited. For us to be on this stage, we want to seize the opportunity.”
Lamont Butler Plays Critical Role in Illinois Victory
Kentucky secured an 84-75 victory over Illinois in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019. The Wildcats showcased their depth and resilience, with Koby Brea leading the scoring with 23 points. However, Lamont Butler’s performance stood out as he played a pivotal role despite battling a shoulder injury.

Butler contributed 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting, along with 5 assists, 3 steals, and 2 rebounds, setting the tone for Kentucky’s defensive intensity.

Lamont Butler’s leadership and defensive prowess were instrumental in disrupting Illinois’ offense, particularly against their star player Kasparas Jakucionis. His quick hands and awareness led to crucial turnovers, including a backcourt steal that resulted in a momentum-shifting dunk by Amari Williams.
