LeBron James still has two years left on his contract heading into the 2024-25 NBA season, and he’s also long desired to be a team owner in the league. Talks of a potential league expansion have been ringing loud recently, as has the talk of James taking a dive into franchise ownership.
According to Maverick Carter, the four-time NBA champion is gung-ho about owning an NBA franchise in the future. James’ longtime friend guested on “The Pat McAfee Show” this week and talked about his determination to become an NBA team owner.
“I think LeBron is dead set on owning an NBA team, but he’s still playing, and I have no idea how much longer he’s going to play,” said Carter. “I would have thought he would be done a few years ago, but he’s out there with the beard now, with the gray. Still letting the young guys know grandpop’s is out here, still balling.”
LeBron James’ retirement: when will it happen?
Last season, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers were eliminated from the NBA Playoffs by the Denver Nuggets for the second straight time. When asked about his future after the playoffs, he seemed noncommittal.
At the time, He didn’t speak much to the media regarding his future plans. When he posted on X in May, he said that he still wasn’t sure about his future as he was prioritizing spending time with his family and friends at the time.
James then opted out of the final year of his deal with the Lakers, only to re-sign with the franchise on a two-year extension last July.
The 39-year-old James had also been open about considering finishing his career without a farewell tour, just like Tim Duncan did. There had also been talks of King James sticking around to wait for his son Bryce to make it to the NBA, but the younger James is doubtful that his dad will stay that long in the league.
King James had the opportunity to add another Olympic gold medal to his trophy case after winning with Team USA in the 2024 Paris Summer Games, where he showed his dominance despite being at the age where most players are considered past their prime. Heading to the upcoming NBA season, his momentum has to be at an all-time high.
The whole NBA fandom is still wondering what James plans to do, whether he will continue competing after the 2024–25 season. Maybe he will just hang up his jerseys after playing alongside his son Bronny.
Only LeBron James knows.
