Will LeBron James move to the Golden State Warriors? That was the idea that an NBA insider suggested is “being revisited” right now. This potential deal, among other things, would see LeBron join forces with one of his biggest rivals lately.
Earlier last season, the story of Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James moving to the Golden State Warriors broke, with reports saying that the latter team called the Lakers near the trade deadline, asking for a possible LeBron trade.
Reportedly, the trade idea was quickly shut down by James and his agency, and nothing about the topic was heard of again—that is, until now.
ESPN reporter and NBA insider Brian Windhorst revealed that there have been talks of LeBron moving to the GSW this season, but the potential trade may not be as simple as it sounds.
“First off, any trade that the Warriors make is gonna be complicated,” Windhorst said. They have only $500,000 that they’re allowed to spend more in this season. It’s first, second apron stuff. I know it’s boring. Any trade that they make, they really can’t take on more money. Guess what? The Lakers are not allowed to take on any money ’cause they’re in the first apron.”
While he highlighted that LeBron can make the trade possible if he would compromise, the likelihood of him leaving the Lakers is low.
“So, it’s possible if LeBron wanted it,” Windhorst added. “Also, LeBron has a no-trade clause. Also, the Lakers don’t own their first-round pick. LeBron has repeatedly made it clear he wants to be a Laker. And if that’s the case, he’s got a no-trade clause. There’s nothin’ really to talk about.”
LeBron James: To Trade, or To Retire?
The idea of LeBron James going to the Golden State Warriors can be one of the biggest plot twists of the past several seasons of the NBA, as it will come as a huge surprise to many, considering factors that made it known to fans that he would always be with the Lakers.
For one, he decided to sign with the Lakers even after going free-agent status. His new two-year contract also includes a no-trade clause, which would mean he would play for the Lakers until he is 41. He also brought his son Bronny to the team, and leaving him early on would not make sense.
Also, LeBron James has repeatedly touched on the idea of retirement, more than the idea of a trade. He acknowledges how long he has been playing, and how he is currently the oldest active NBA player around. With that said, he made it clear that he does not plan to play for a long time, at least “not until the wheels fall off.”
