After a championship-winning season, the New York Liberty are firmly positioned at the top of the WNBA power rankings going into 2025. The team has retained its core of superstars, including Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones, while making strategic moves to maintain their competitive edge.
The offseason has been eventful, with free agency shaking up many rosters across the league. New York lost Courtney Vandersloot, a significant contributor during their championship run, but have managed to keep their foundational players intact. The return of key bench players adds to their depth, which is crucial for sustaining performance throughout a demanding season.

New York’s offseason additions, including Raquel Correra and Esmery Martinez, are designed to bolster the roster’s versatility. With the potential return of Marine Johannés and Rebekah Gardner, the team’s lineup is set to be both dynamic and formidable. The blend of veteran experience and youthful talent positions them well for another successful campaign.
New York’s strong performance last season was built on a combination of skill, teamwork, and effective coaching. They demonstrated an ability to excel on both ends of the court, leading to their championship victory. Maintaining this chemistry will be vital as they look to defend their title against a league filled with emerging contenders.
New York Liberty Lands in First Place of Bleacher Report’s Latest WNBA Power Rankings

New York is entering the new season as the number one team in the league. This can be seen in an analysis done by Nekias Duncan for Bleacher Report.
It’s only right that the champs tip off the power rankings.
The stars—Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones—will be back. High-impact pieces like Betnijah Laney-Hamilton (heck of an Unrivaled debut, by the way) and Leonie Fiebich will be back. I’m excited to see what kind of growth we see from Nyara Sabally and Kennedy Burke, with the latter likely to have more responsibility with the departure of Thornton.
As other teams, like the Minnesota Lynx and Indiana Fever, made significant offseason changes, the Liberty must remain vigilant. The Fever’s acquisitions, including DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard, have set the stage for heightened competition. New York’s ability to adapt and respond to these challenges will define their season.

New York enters the 2025 season as the frontrunners in the WNBA power rankings. With a solid roster and championship experience, they are poised for another strong showing, but they must remain focused to fend off the competition and secure back-to-back titles.
