The drama that is the Los Angeles Lakers head coach search is about to reach a surprising conclusion after Adrian Wojnarowski dropped a major plot twist: Dan Hurley may be headed to Hollywood.
Everyone will agree that Hurley is the perfect hire for the Purple and Gold. Not only is he a proven winner with the UConn Huskies, but he also has the attitude to survive in an environment as cutthroat as the Lakers’ locker room. It also helps that LeBron James highly rates his approach to the game.

While a formal announcement is still waiting to be made, some fans are already making guesses on how Hurley will transform the Lakers roster into a championship contender in only one offseason.
However, there’s still one wrinkle that needs to be addressed before any prospective moves about how his Lakers would look is made.
Dan Hurley will pay UConn $2 million if he decides to leave for the Los Angeles Lakers

Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams wrote about the details on Hurley’s contract that would have to be ironed out should the two-time NCAA champion decide to make the leap to the pros.
He detailed that while he’s expected to shell out money when he decides to leave, the punishment for breaching his six-year, $32.1-million contract is not that painful:
The deal, a copy of which was obtained by Sportico via records request, includes two parallel payment structures should he leave early: one for NBA jobs, and one for other D1 college jobs. In contrast to the $1.875 million owed if he goes to an NBA team, Hurley would owe UConn $7.5 million if he left the school tomorrow for another NCAA gig.
The Lakers will surely pitch in to make Hurley’s payout less painful. However, it’s clear with how the contract is set up that the Huskies are more than happy to let Hurley walk to an NBA team than see him run off to a rival Division I program.

It will be interesting to see how Hurley will transform the Los Angeles Lakers, and this will just be a blip in the Purple and Gold’s memory if they manage to win it all next year.
