The Los Angeles Lakers have made it official. After selecting Bronny James with the No. 55 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the 19-year-old will join his dad, LeBron James, in LA to become the first-ever father-and-son duo to play together in the NBA.
Playing in the league is a dream come true for Bronny, but there’s no denying that this is an even more momentous occasion for LeBron, who has been very vocal about his desire to one day play with his son in the league.
That day is finally upon us.
Los Angeles Lakers News: LeBron James’ Reaction to LA Drafting Bronny James
According to NBA insider Dave McMenamin of ESPN, LeBron arranged an “intimate dinner” on Thursday night in New York City, where the draft was being held. He was joined by his family and closest friends in a party that reportedly did not have more than 20 people.
Unsurprisingly, LeBron got all emotional the moment he received a call from the Lakers to confirm that they were drafting Bronny:
“When they got the call from the Lakers, LeBron James had a champagne toast to everyone there,” McMenamin said. “Sources told me he got very emotional considering the weight of the moment. Not just the history for the NBA — the first time you have a father-son duo playing together. … But really the journey for Bronny James. his [son].”

McMenamin highlighted the fact that Bronny is just one year removed from a life-threatening health scare involving his heart, which only made the significance of this moment even more compelling for the James family.
At the end of the day, LeBron is over the moon about being able to play with his son, but the fact of the matter is that he’s just extremely proud of what Bronny has just achieved.
