There hasn’t even been a single minute of basketball played, but the expectations are already ridiculously high for the Los Angeles Lakers. Every player in the Purple and Gold roster knows that saying anything other than winning the Larry O’Brien trophy is disappointing.
The pressure is even greater for JJ Redick. Many questioned the organization’s decision to back the rookie head coach to take on the hottest seat in the NBA, and many of the fans are anxious about how Redick would fare while carrying the expectations of a championship on his shoulders.
The retired sharpshooter and former media personality promised to take things differently with his head coach, and recent reports show that Redick is taking steps to transform the Lakers.
Report: Los Angeles Lakers are engaging in more live-game scrimmages under JJ Redick
Lakers Daily’s Jesse Cinquini wrote that Redick’s first practices with the Lakers roster are already approaching preseason differently from previous coaches:
“Those workouts are the first in the formalized relationship between J.J. Redick, his staff and the players, and the first impression might offer some hints as to how the new coach will operate,” Woike wrote.
“Workouts have featured more live basketball — one on one and three on three — than past summers when the focus was more on individual, noncompetitive work.
“This could be one step of the player development changes that Redick vowed to make when he took the job this summer, a change the organization has tied to the changing salary cap rules. But, honestly, the changes probably were overdue.”
The Purple and Gold have a capable roster. After all, any roster featuring LeBron James and Anthony Davis would always have a chance of making a deep playoff run. However, the rest of the team must be able to step up to the organization and fans’ lofty standards.
The first games of the season will give fans an idea if the JJ Redick experiment is right for the Los Angeles Lakers. Hopefully, his schematic changes would eventually result in a successful Finals appearance.
