Many Los Angeles Lakers fans are excited to see the NBA return. It’s been months since they last saw the Purple and Gold in action. They are eager to see how the team would perform during games that matter with a new head coach in the sidelines.
However, that doesn’t mean that Lakers fans and the rest of the NBA didn’t pay attention to what was happening in the WNBA. Caitlin Clark’s rookie season brought attention to a league that’s always struggled to get fans to watch their games.
While she didn’t have a serious presence in the WNBA postseason, her influence had enough fans curious on what pro women’s basketball would play out. Eyes were glued in as the New York Liberty clinched the 2024 WNBA title.
If you need further proof that people are invested in the WNBA this season, you don’t have to look further than the King himself.
LeBron James shares thoughts on controversial 2024 WNBA Finals Game 5 moment
The Liberty’s first WNBA title was important for a big-market team that’s been around in the league since its start in 1997. The celebration meant so much that star guard Sabrina Ioenscu injured herself in the process of celebrating.
However, the last game of the series went to the wire, with the Minnesota Lynx even threatening to overwhelm the Liberty during the game’s dying embers. ClutchPoints’ Rexwell Villas wrote how a supposed foul from Alanna Smith eventually swung the momentum for the Liberty.
He also noted James’ reaction to the controversy:
“I’m sorry but that wasn’t a foul!” James posted on X (formerly Twitter) as a reaction to the foul call on Smith. “Let the damn players dictate the outcome of a close battled tested game. ”
This isn’t the first time the Los Angeles Lakers forward complained about officiating affecting the game. One of his most recent outbursts against referees affecting the game state happened during the Purple and Gold’s Game 2 loss to the Denver Nuggets.
LeBron James hopes to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to the 2025 NBA title
While James was among many basketball fans that followed the WNBA Finals, he’s now completely focused on helping the Purple and Gold make another deep playoff run.
The road will be tough for this year’s Los Angeles Lakers squad since many of their opponents feature strong lineups that can cause trouble for the veteran squad.
However, they will always have a chance as long as King James is ready to play: the future Hall of Famer averaged 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.3 assists a game last season.
If he continues to keep these numbers up and Redick manages to transform the Lakers into a potent basketball team, they will have a shot at winning the Larry O’Brien trophy in June.
