UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley seems to be on the verge of making a major career decision. The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly made an offer to Hurley, who could reveal his decision as soon as this Monday.
Dan Hurley on the verge of making a decision on Los Angeles Lakers offer
One thing that is said to be holding Hurley back is his attachment to the program he has helped rejuvenate.
UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley told ESPN that the Los Angeles Lakers made a “compelling case” and presented a “compelling vision” for him to become the franchise’s next coach but that he loves what he has built at two-time defending national champion UConn — and plans to make a decision on his future Monday.
The Lakers are looking for someone to take over the vacant head-coaching spot left by Darvin Ham when Los Angeles fired him following an early exit from the 2024 NBA Playoffs. Hurley has no experience coaching in the NBA but is regarded as one of the best minds in basketball today amid the incredible success of the Huskies under his mentorship. The Huskies have been to the Big Dance in each of the last four seasons, including in the last two where they won national titles.
The Lakers seem to believe that Hurley has what it takes to carry over that kind of success into Tinseltown. But first, Hurley has to accept the job. Otherwise, it will be back to square one for the Lakers, though, they are also reportedly looking in the direction of JJ Redick and James Borrego.
