It seems that the Los Angeles Lakers are closing in on their next head coach. It has been nearly a month since they gave Darvin Ham the axe, and it appears that the front office is biding its time before making a monumental decision that will have a tremendous impact both in the short and long term.
One candidate, in particular, now seems to be separating himself from the pack. According to ESPN’s NBA guru Adrian Wojnarowski, New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego was in LA on Wednesday for a second interview for the coaching vacancy in Hollywood.
Los Angeles Lakers News: James Borrego Emerges as ‘Very Serious Candidate’
Woj reported on Wednesday that the Lakers are taking a significant step towards hiring Borrego as their next head honcho:
“James Borrego is meeting with the Lakers today in LA. This is his second meeting,” Woj said. “… He’s a very serious candidate in this Lakers search, but they’re gonna bring in more… They’re no where close on this one.”

Woj made it abundantly clear, however, that the Lakers aren’t exactly expected to make a decision in the immediate future. Borrego may be closing in on the job, but this does not mean that he is currently LA’s top choice.
As Woj said in his report, the Lakers are not ready to make an announcement on their new head coach just yet. The fans have no other choice but to wait a little bit longer.
