Former NBA player and now Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick turns 40 years old this Monday. But it’s not just the only reason why Monday is a huge one for the ex-Duke Blue Devils star, as the Lakers are also scheduled to officially announce him as the franchise’s newest head coach, per Jovan Buha of The Athletic.
“JJ Redick will be introduced as the next Los Angeles Lakers head coach tomorrow. The press conference is at 1:30 pm PT at LA’s practice facility. Tomorrow is also Redick’s 40th birthday.”
The Lakers’ search for a new head coach was a big topic in the offseason. They initially targeted and offered UConn Huskies head coach and two-time NCAA champion mentor Dan Hurley, who ultimately decided to stay in Storrs as the Huskies look to win their third national title in a row. Apart from Redick, the Lakers also reportedly had New Orleans Pelicans assistant head coach James Borrego on their radar. But the Lakers are now in the hands of Redick, who was hired by Los Angeles despite him having zero coaching experience.
New Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick will be under immense pressure right away

Redick takes over the head-coaching gig for the Lakers after they fired Darvin Ham following a first-round exit from the 2024 NBA Playoffs, where they lost in five games to Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets.

Redick must have known the pressure and the attention that come with being the Lakers head coach. Los Angeles fans always expect success regardless of the circumstances, and it’s not going to be different in Redick’s first season with the team. The Lakers went 43-39 with Ham in 2022-23 and made the Western Conference finals. The following season, Los Angeles put together a 47-35 record.
