For several weeks now, JJ Redick has generated a lot of buzz as the Los Angeles Lakers’ potential head coach for next season. But for Byron Scott, though, the NBA analyst should be wary to take the job due to his lack of experience in that field.
Before L.A. considered Redick for the top coaching job, Darvin Ham spent two seasons as the team’s head coach. Back in 2022, the former Milwaukee Bucks star took over from Frank Vogel after he was let go by the franchise. Since then, Ham has guided the LeBron James-led squad to a Western Conference Finals appearance last year.
Unfortunately, they fell short after Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets eliminated them clean via four-game sweep. Even if that’s the case, there was hope that the Purple and Gold will build on the momentum they had during the 2022-23 campaign and have a better run this season.
As seen in the past few months, that wasn’t the case at all. After the In-Season Tournament, the Lakers struggled in the regular season and only managed to get a playoff spot via the Play-In Tournament. However, they lost again to the Nuggets in the this year’s first round series. As a result, Ham was let go and a vacancy had to be filled by the front office as soon as possible.
Byron Scott Warns JJ Redick About Potential Los Angeles Lakers Head Coaching Gig
After Ham was fired, NBA analyst JJ Redick was rumored to be one of the primary candidates for the job. But for former coach Byron Scott, he should be wary in taking the gig, as written in an article posted by TMZ.
“It’s hard jumping in that seat as a first-time head coach,” Scott said. “I don’t know if he has what it takes to be a great head coach in the NBA but again if he gets that opportunity, we’ll find out real soon.”
Scott himself is a three-time NBA champion and a one-time Coach of the Year during the 2007-08 season. He also has a record 454 wins and 647 losses in his 15 years of coaching experience. If there’s someone who knows what he’s talking about when it comes to coaching, it’s going to be Scott.
It remains to be seen whether the Lakers go for Redick, Boston Celtics assistant coach Sam Cassell, or James Borrego. In any case, it’s going to be an interesting time moving forward for fans of the Purple and Gold.
