Los Angeles Lakers news: In the end, it was the Dallas Mavericks who won it all in what turned out to be a brief Klay Thompson sweepstakes. The Mavs agreed on a sign-and-trade deal with the Golden State Warriors, which also involved the Charlotte Hornets as a third team in the deal.
For his part, Thompson is set to sign a three-year deal with the Mavs for $50 million. As it turns out, however, Klay could have earned more had he accepted the offer from the Lakers.
Los Angeles Lakers News: Klay Thompson Turned Down Bigger Offer From LA
According to Anthony Irwin of Lakers Daily, LA’s offer was actually $30 million more than what the Mavs had on the table (h/t NBA Central on X, formerly Twitter):
“The Lakers were willing to offer Klay Thompson $80 million over four years, per @AnthonyIrwinLA.”
The Lakers’ offer was for four years, which means that this comes out to around $20 million per season. This pales in comparison to what Thompson agreed with the Mavs, which is roughly $16.7 million per.
Reports indicate that one of the reasons behind Thompson’s decision to pick Dallas over LA was because of the massive difference in the cost of living in Texas as compared to Hollywood. I guess this means Klay’s annual savings in Dallas will be more than the $3.3 million he lost out on by declining the offer from the Lakers.
Either that or Thompson just really did not want to go to LA.
