For the first time in a very long time, LeBron James will not be playing on a max deal when he enters the new season with the Los Angeles Lakers. This is after the 39-year-old gave LA a $2.7 million discount in order for the team to gain more roster flexibility.
This is a noble gesture from LeBron, especially considering how this could be the last NBA contract he ever signs.
Los Angeles Lakers News: LeBron Hints at Retirement
James himself admits that his most recent extension with the Lakers could very well be his last. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer will turn 40 this season, which means that his new two-year deal will keep him in Hollywood until he’s 41.
According to James, that could be the end of the line for him:
“I mean, it could be [the last contract I will ever sign],” LeBron told Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “I’d never sit up here and say, ‘Oh, maybe not.’ Yeah, it could be. Easily. But we’ll see what happens.”
LeBron isn’t closing any doors, but he’s also been quite vocal about his career coming to an end. He is now entering season 22 and there’s no denying that he’s done so much throughout his iconic tenure in the league.
Should these be the final couple of playing years for James, then he will surely make them count. For the fans, it’s time that we all fully appreciate this man’s greatness while we still can.
