Klay Thompson’s dad, Mychal Thompson, used to play for the Los Angeles Lakers and even won a couple of championships with the Purple & Gold franchise. That is also it hurts him that his son opted to go to the Dallas Mavericks instead of following in his footsteps by electing to become a Laker.
Mychal Thompson speaks up about Klay Thompson’s decision to go to Dallas instead of joining the Los Angeles Lakers

During a Tuesday appearance on Sirius XM NBA Radio’s “The Starting Lineup, Mychal shared his true feelings about his son’s move to the Mavs (h/t Chuck Schilken of Yahoo Sports).
Mychal Thompson did not try to hide his disappointment the next day, telling radio hosts Frank Isola and Brian Scalabrine to “hold your congratulations. I’m not feeling too much in a congratulatory mood right now.”
However, Mychal still understands that Klay is his own man, who can make decisions for himself even if that means going against outside pressure.
“I mean, obviously, it’s Klay’s decision, it’s his life, he’s a grown man, 34 years of age,” Thompson said. “Just like we were 34 one time and our fathers used to give us advice and, you know, we would choose our own path. And that’s fine, that’s what life is supposed to be about.
Instead of staying with the Warriors or taking an offer from the Lakers, Klay agreed with the Mavericks on a three-year deal worth $50 million. With the Mavs, he joins a ready-made title contender alongside superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
As for the Lakers, the hunt for a big NBA free agency splash continues.
