The Los Angeles Lakers are pretty excited about being able to pick up Tennessee star Dalton Knecht with their No. 17 overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft. After all, LA never imagined that the 6-foot-6 guard would still be available at that point in the draft.
As it turns out, new Lakers head coach JJ Redick is also already very much looking forward to having the young rookie on his roster.
Los Angeles Lakers News: JJ Redick Already Drawing Up Plays for Dalton Knecht
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka was clearly hyped by how his team got what many consider the steal of the draft. The high-ranking executive also revealed how Redick had already started planning for Knecht’s arrival as soon as they scooped up the reigning SEC Player of the Year:
“He was already at his whiteboard drawing up pindowns and ATO and actions where he could run a movement shooter off screen,” Pelinka said (h/t Jack Murray of Bleacher Report). “I think his mind is already working on drawing up plays for Dalton.”
As Pelinka expressed, the Lakers did not think they would be able to get Knecht at 17, which is probably why Redick was very excited when they picked him up. So much so, that the newly-appointed Lakers tactician immediately pulled out his whiteboard to start drawing up plays for the young guard.
Needless to say, Knecht is going to be a big part of LA’s plans for 2024-25.
