The Los Angeles Lakers finally have their head coach in JJ Redick. The new head coach already made waves in his introductory press conference by announcing the end of his famous Old Man & the Three podcast to focus on his coaching career.
While eyes are on Redick and what he could do with the Purple and Gold, some people still look back at the Lakers’ surprising pursuit of Dan Hurley. The pursuit of Hurley may have blindsided a couple of fans, but the move made sense given the lofty aspirations of the Purple and Gold.
While Hurley eventually turned down the $70-million offer he got from the Lakers, the ordeal put the team in a bad light that they cannot even lure a two-time NCAA champion into the team with all the money they can offer.
While the Lakers now have their head coach for the foreseeable future, Rob Pelinka has decided to open about what happened during the rapid days when they tried to get Hurley into the team.
Rob Pelinka discusses the Los Angeles Lakers’ Dan Hurley saga
During the press conference, the media was simply itching to ask about the rush hiring they tried to pull off with Hurley before ultimately settling with Redick.
Pelinka addressed the question, per The Spun’s Andrew Gould:
“Happy to talk more about the entire process at another time. Today’s sort of JJ’s day,” Pelinka said, via Mark Medina. “I will say this: From the start, [Redick] was in our Plan A pool of coaches that we were really interested in exploring.”
It was a considerate move on Pelinka’s part as Redick was supposed to be the star. However, it cannot be denied that Redick will be measured up against Hurley for everything he will do next season.
Fans will hope that Redick is the right man who will take the Los Angeles Lakers back to their glory days.
