Iowa Hawkeyes guard Lucy Olsen opened up about how she felt playing for the team as a transferee and how the team and the community have felt to her so far.
In a video posted by the Iowa Hawkeyes Instagram page, several team players answered the question of what it means for them to play for Iowa. Among others, Lucy Olsen’s response stood out, with her being a recent transferee.
“It was just yesterday that I was answering all these questions about Iowa and I don’t know,” she said, starting a bit awkwardly. “Just from the start it felt like family, it felt the best community and now that I have been here for so long and it really is like that so. They just took a chance on me and I don’t know, it’s a lot.”

“This team is so special to me.”
Lucy Olsen was a significant contributor during Iowa’s most recent game against Michigan, where the Hawkeyes won 79-66. She was particularly effective from beyond the arc, scoring 20 points and grabbing five rebounds. Olsen shot 8-of-16 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Olsen was especially dominant during the second quarter, where she scored 16 of her 20 points. She didn’t attempt a shot in the first quarter but quickly found her rhythm, shooting 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 from three-point range in the second quarter alone. Her scoring burst helped Iowa build a substantial lead, and her performance helped the team maintain that advantage throughout the game.
Why Did Lucy Olsen Transfer to Iowa Hawkeyes?
Lucy Olsen was eligible for the WNBA Draft after her junior season at Villanova, but she chose to play another college season and transferred to Iowa.

One of her main reasons for this decision was the opportunity for further development and exposure. She wanted to continue honing her skills in a competitive environment, and Iowa’s strong basketball program provided the perfect setting for her to grow as a player and leader.

Another factor was the need to replace Caitlin Clark, who left for the WNBA. Iowa was in search of a new point guard to fill the void, and Olsen saw this as a prime opportunity to step into a significant role and make a substantial impact on a high-profile team. Her decision was also influenced by the sense of community and family she felt at Iowa, which made the transition easier for her.
So far this season, Lucy Olsen is averaging 17.9 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.9 assists.
