Dallas Mavericks star players Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving got a new team member for the 2024-2025 season, when former Detroit Pistons shooting guard Quentin Grimes got traded to the Mavs. The trade was made in an effort by the Mavs to improve their roster, as Grimes is known to be an all-around player, excelling in defense and his three-point skills.
In an interview with Sportskeeda, Grimes touched on his experience adjusting to his new team, how the Mavs staff have helped, and how he compared the play styles of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
“I’ve felt a lot more comfortable with every game I play,” Grimes told Sportskeeda. “Every time I step on the court, I feel like I know exactly what I’m doing offensively and defensively. It’s about getting more reps and becoming more familiar with everything, and I feel like I’m doing that every time I’m out there.”
Grimes also discussed learning to adapt to the play styles of Doncic and Irving, particularly for Doncic who missed the preseason.
“It only took me a couple games, especially since we didn’t have Luka for preseason and training camp, to get a feel for them,” Grimes said.
“Both have an insane amount of skill and can dominate at any time,” he added, talking about the two star players.
With his time playing with the team, Grimes learned the difference between how Doncic and Irving play. Based on his observations, he found that one is more aggressive, and one is more controlled.
“Kyrie pushes the pace—he’s super fast and quick. Luka is more decisive, kind of likes to slow the game down, lull guys to sleep,” Grimes detailed. “Luka will hit you at any time on the court, so you just have to stay ready. Kyrie will push the ball up, and he’ll go to work. Once you get a feel for their styles, it makes it easier to get into a rhythm.”
Luka Doncic and His Viral “No Look Pass” to Kyrie Irving
Luka Doncic recently went viral for his smooth moves inside the court. During the Mavs’ game with the Toronto Raptors, Doncic did a smooth “no-look pass” to Kyrie Irving, which delighted fans.
During the first quarter of the game, Doncic had the ball inside the paint and was guarded all over. He then did a spin move and threw a pass to his back, without looking, to Irving who was waiting just behind the three-point line, who caught it and quickly made the shot.
The Mavs won the Raptors game 125-118. Luka Doncic did 30 points for the game, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists.
