No one will deny that Dwyane Wade is one of the best players to put on a Miami Heat jersey. The Marquette graduate is responsible for every championship banner the team has at the Kaseya Center and has embodied what Heat Culture means for many of the team’s fans.
He’s enjoying a comfortable life outside of the hardwood since hanging them up for good in 2019, with his most recent activities involving being in the broadcasting booth covering the men’s basketball event in the 2024 Olympics.
However, controversy never seems to leave the Heat legend’s life. His decision to show up in public with painted nails, which he did in support of his transgender daughter, sparked outrage among a pocket of NBA fans. He was even hounded when he congratulated Noah Lyles for “trivializing” the sprinter’s achievement.
While the man hasn’t addressed these allegations directly, people around him weren’t so kind as to turn the other cheek. One of his former teammates even went forward to call out Wade’s critics for doing something that doesn’t directly affect them.
Udonis Haslem protects former Miami Heat teammate for his decision to paint his nails
Udonis Haslem has played with Wade for almost the entirety of his career with the Heat, so he felt pretty passionate when it came to topics involving his old teammate.
In a recent episode of The OGs podcast, Haslem fired back at critics for doing something that supports his daughterZaya.
Per Basketball Forever’s Duncan McColl:
“He’s doing nothing wrong by supporting his kids,” Haslem said. “He should support Zaya and every dream that she has, regardless of what she wants to do in life. That’s a father’s and a parent’s job.
“So, regardless of that, sitting at home, painting his nails with his daughters so what? … In the world today, when we see so many girls that grow up and have daddy issues, and he’s making sure that don’t happen. And we criticise that sh*t. Stop that sh*t, that’s hatin’.”
While such a statement won’t change what people think about DWade’s decisions, it’s nice for the Miami Heat legend to know that his teammates have his back.
