Miami Heat superstar Jimmy Butler has bet on himself in the past. As it turns out, this is the six-time All-Star’s bold plan again this coming season with his current contract expiring next summer.
Despite rampant rumors, it appears that the Heat will not be trading Butler away this offseason. However, the 34-year-old also has no intention of signing a new deal with the team.
Miami Heat News: Jimmy Butler Plans to Play Out Contract
NBA guru Shams Charania of The Athletic dropped a bombshell about Butler’s future in South Beach on Wednesday night. According to the renowned league insider, Butler intends to play out the final year of his contract this coming season with the hope of securing a massive payday this time next year.
This report comes via ClutchPoints on X, formerly Twitter:
“He’s going to play out next season under his current contract with the Heat. I’m told he will not be signing an extension with the Heat or any other team ahead of his opt out in 2025 free agency.”
“Shams Charania says Jimmy Butler will not be traded and is determined to have a big season in order to earn a potential 4-year, $240 million deal with the Miami Heat,” read the report.
This is both good and bad for the Heat. The upside is that Butler will be playing at least one more season in Miami. It’s going to be a contract year for him so he’s going to be even more motivated to prove himself. It should be a big year ahead for the five-time All-NBA forward.
The bad news for the Heat, however, is that this development makes the possibility of losing Butler next summer in free agency even more probable. At least a few opposing teams have been monitoring Butler’s situation in South Beach, and they would be more than happy to pounce on the 34-year-old once he becomes a free agent next term.
This likely means that the Heat will need to pay Butler more than they would have wanted in order to secure his services beyond next season.
