The Miami Heat may have made peace with the idea that they might not make the play-in tournament. While the team still has a shot to make the postseason despite currently having a 29-41 record, it’s also clear that their losing streak might see them out of the postseason sooner than later.
Jimmy Butler‘s departure from South Beach is the most obvious reason behind the team’s recent struggles, and Erik Spoelstra’s failure to find a better alternative after the temperamental superstar’s departure may have all but sealed their fate this season.

Their most recent loss against the Houston Rockets show that the Heat may not be up to face the East’s best teams this season. However, the head coach decided to go another direction and praise an opponent while not also addressing the Heat’s future.
Erik Spoelstra praises Fred VanVleet for impressive performance against the Miami Heat

While many may think the Heat as non-factors in the 2025 postseason, they put up a great fight against the Houston Rockets.
The team only lost by four points against the visiting Houston Rockets. Andrew Wiggins had a phenomenal game, bagging 30 points on 10-for-13 shooting against one of the better defensive teams in the association. Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware also had great games for Miami, scoring 16 points each.
However, Fred VanVleet proved too much for Miami as he exploded for 37 points, three assists, and three steals. Spoelstra ceded that the one-time NBA champion just had a phenomenal game against them.
Per Heavy’s Adam Taylor:
“He had one of those nights,” Spoelstra said via Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. “He’s a competitor, so it can look a lot of different ways when he just makes winning plays. It can be a deflection, steals. It can be 20 points. I think he had nine threes, that’s not totally typical. He was hitting some bombs.”
Aside from VanVleet’s offensive outburst, Tyler Herro’s poor outing also played a factor in the loss. The Heat’s top player had an off night, only sinking three of his 11 shot attempts for eight points.
What does the future look like for the Heat?

The Heat have been a perennial postseason team, but it’s fair to think that the latest struggles may have put question marks in their future.
Taylor noted that while many NBA players would love to play in South Beach, Pat Riley’s presence in the organization may have driven players away. It’s been proven with the departures of Butler, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade.
While it’s unlikely that the franchise will send one of its most influential figures packing, the team’s recent woes may have given fans things to think about.
