The Dusty May era of the Michigan basketball got off to a nice start after the Wolverines crushed the Cleveland State Vikings last Monday in Ann Arbor, 101-53, for the program’s first win of the 2024-25 season — and first since May took over the head-coaching gig for the team.
The Wolverines also scored another win off the court on Saturday when five-star guard prospect Trey McKenney revealed that he’s committed to playing for Michigan
McKenney is the second four-star 2025 commit for the Wolverines and third overall for that class. Back in October, Michigan secured the commitments of four-star small forward Winters Grady and international prospect Oscar Goodman (Australia).

Apparently, McKenney has been a fan of Mays’ style, which helped the Florida Atlantic make waves in past March Madness editions.
Via Jeff Borzello and Paul Biancardi of ESPN:
“Their style of play really fits me,” McKenney said. “It’s positionless, physical basketball with concepts. They will look to run and make reads at a fast pace like his teams did at FAU. My game is versatile on both ends and I believe I fit well into their plans. In time, I have the chance to be the face of the program. Coach May is a basketball guy. My faith leads me, and I try to think things out. I trust Coach May. He gives off positive vibes.”
May’s time with the Owls was a memorable one, to say the least. He coached Florida Atlantic for six seasons and even led the Owls to a Final Four appearance in the 2024 Big Dance.
Now with a bigger program, May is hoping that talents like McKenney will help boost Michigan basketball, which has not been to the National Tournament in each of the last two seasons.
