For the longest time, everyone saw the Minnesota Timberwolves as one of the most disappointing franchises in the NBA. But after All-Star guard Anthony Edwards, former number one pick Karl-Anthony Towns, and current Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert led the roster to a Western Conference Finals appearance, there’s a lot of promise waiting in the future. To make sure that happens, the team will get a new general manager in Matt Lloyd.
Lloyd has been a fixture in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ front office for the past two seasons, and his contributions have now been recognized with a well-deserved promotion. His basketball journey began in 1994 as a game-day and special projects employee in the video room for the Chicago Bulls, where he spent 13 years. He then spent 10 years in Orlando, taking on multiple front-office roles.

The Timberwolves’ President of Basketball Operations, Tim Connelly, holds the final decision-making authority, but Lloyd’s promotion cements his position as the No. 2 man in the organization’s front office, second only to Connelly. Earlier this offseason, he was reportedly a finalist for the Charlotte Hornets’ president of basketball operations job, but the Timberwolves were determined to retain him and maintain continuity in their front office.
Even after the Hornets hired Jeff Peterson for that role, they reportedly offered Lloyd a similar position in their new-look front office, but he opted to remain with the Timberwolves. This decision has now been rewarded with a well-deserved promotion, solidifying his place as a key figure in the Timberwolves’ ongoing efforts to build a competitive and sustainable franchise.
Minnesota Timberwolves Elevate Matt Lloyd to Become Team’s General Manager

In order to build on the success they had last season, the Timberwolves elevated Lloyd to a position where he can better manage the Anthony Edwards-led squad. In a press release posted on the league’s official website, Connelly expressed his excitement about the latest development.
“We are thrilled for Matt and his well-earned promotion,” said Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly. “He’s a wonderful teammate whose tireless work ethic and positivity have made a huge impact on our organization.”
Lloyd joined the Timberwolves in 2020 after a 10-year tenure with the Orlando Magic, including two seasons as Vice President of Basketball Operations. He was responsible for overseeing the Magic’s scouting departments and assisting with roster management, and he also served as interim general manager in 2017.

Now that the Wolves finally have enough talent in the roster, their front office will have to keep up if the franchise hopes to compete in the coming seasons. Fortunately, the latest move of promoting Lloyd can help make that a possibility.
