Adam Silver needs to let go of the older NBA legends and highlight younger players more, at least that is a strategy that sports journalist and host Dan Patrick thinks the NBA commissioner should consider exploring.
In one of the recent episodes of “The Dan Patrick Show,” Dan discussed one of the potential reasons why the NBA is seeing a decline in viewership and interest. As he saw it, part of it could be the fact that the NBA is yet to have a new superstar who would follow in the footsteps of the older legends, such as LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kevin Durant.
“The NBA has to look at, are you developing your star?” Dan said. “The biggest names in the sport are still LeBron [James], Steph [Curry] and [Kevin Durant]. That’s a big issue because if I look at the NFL, you got to have young stars.”
“Anthony Edwards has all the makings of a young star, [Victor] Wembanyama has all the makings of being a big star, but they’re not there yet,” Dan continued. “Steph, KD, [and] LeBron [are] still there and I think as you grow your league you want another generation to grow with those superstars or potential superstars.”
He added: “They have to be part of the everyday vernacular where you’re asking about them [and] you’re talking about them.”
LeBron James is currently the oldest active NBA player, and will turn 40 on December 30. l He’s been playing in the NBA for more than two decades and is currently on his 22nd season. Steph Curry is 36 and has been playing since 2099. He catapulted to stardom during the 2014-2015 season and has since revolutionized how three-points are utilized in the NBA. Kevin Durant is also 36 and is on his 18th season of his career. He won the 2008 Rookie of The Year award and has since been part of two championships with the Warriors and had two Finals MVPs under his name.
Adam Silver’s New All-Star Game Has “No Reason to Be Important”
In the same show, Dan’s co-host Patrick “Seton” O’Connor also shared his insight on how Adam Silver has changed the rules and format of the NBA All-Star game.
“There’s like one fundamental flaw in everything with the All-Star Game,” Seton said. “There’s no reason for the All-Star Game to matter, it’s just supposed to be fun. There’s no reason for it to be that important.”
While Adam Silver has acknowledged potential game problems surrounding teams of the NBA, he has downplayed the long-running complaint of the NBA having “too many three-points.”
