NBA Draft 2025: Could Cooper Flagg Actually End Up in San Antonio and Partner With Victor Wembanyama?

With the college basketball season just days away from its conclusion, Cooper Flagg does not have much longer to wait before he will hear his name called as the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. While the NBA’s bottom feeders have been tanking all season for the chance to selected the superstar freshman, a dark horse in the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes has been emerging over the course of the last few months. Yes, it is possible that the San Antonio Spurs could pair Cooper Flagg with Victor Wembanyama and form one of the most imposing young duos in modern league history.

Cooper Flagg Set to Star in San Antonio At the Final Four – Could It Also Be His New NBA Home?

This weekend’s Final Four, which Cooper Flagg has helped lead an impressive Duke team to, is set in San Antonio. It is very possible that Flagg’s Duke will be hoisting the championship trophy on Monday. But is it possible that such a reality would be far from the last significant moment of Flagg’s career to happen in the Alamo City?

Despite Flagg commenting about staying in college another year, few expect that anyone other than Flagg will be the #1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Set to star in San Antonio on college basketball’s biggest weekend, Flagg could be destined to star in the city for years to come if the Spurs end up with the #1 overall pick. They could theoretically pair Flagg with French superstar and generational talent Victor Wembanyama, whom the Spurs selected #1 overall two years ago.

Overview of NBA Draft Lottery Odds – San Antonio Approaching

The worst three teams in the NBA are the ones with the best odds for the #1 overall pick at 14.0%. The San Antonio Spurs are far from the top three, which currently is Utah, Washington, and Charlotte, who all have under 20 wins. The Spurs, at 32-44, have the eighth worst record in the NBA as of April 3rd. 8th highest in the lottery rankings means the Spurs will have a 6.0% chance at #1 overall.

In late February, Wembanyama was shut down due to blood clots, and their season has gone downhill since. With newly acquired star De’Aaron Fox now also on the shelf, the Spurs have lost 10 out of their last 16 games and are climbing the odds list.

While it would certainly be improbable, crazier things have happened in the NBA Draft Lottery. For example, in 2019, the New Orleans Pelicans turned their 6.0% odds into the #1 pick and landed themselves Zion Williamson. While Williamson has had his struggles with injury during his time in the league, it remains a stellar turn of fortunes for the franchise.

Just last year, the Atlanta Hawks had a slim 3.0% chance at the #1 pick, and while top prospect Zaccharie Risacher was far from the clear-cut answer at #1 (at least, compared to players like Williamson and Flagg, who were/are surefire top picks), the Hawks landed Risacher after magically securing the rights to the top selection.

A Flagg and Wembanyama Duo Would Be Otherworldly

A Flagg and Wembanyama pairing would quickly turn into one of the NBA’s top attractions.

Spurs fans have already begun dreaming of the franchise’s next superstar pairing. Decades after David Robinson and Tim Duncan delivered championships together, Flagg and Wemby could be the next two up.

The Spurs have had generational luck and fortune in the past 30 years.

From David Robinson, to the #1 pick and Tim Duncan, to Kawhi Leonard, to five championships, and now Victor Wembanyama.

    Please, anyone else. https://t.co/eQb8vDnWJC
