Ever since the Dream Team led the United States to a dominant win during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, NBA players have been expected to be part of the national squad. For Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, though, that should not be the case at all.
Back in 2004, Cuban delved into the contentious topic of NBA players participating in the Olympics. The Mavericks owner, known for his candid opinions, raised valid concerns about the implications of the league’s stars competing in the global sports event. He questioned the rationale behind risking valuable players and potentially diminishing the league’s revenue streams by supporting a rival entity such as the Olympics.
Cuban argued for a more controlled and lucrative approach, suggesting the creation of an NBA-sanctioned international tournament that would not only prioritize player safety but also serve as a platform for promoting the league and its athletes. He emphasized the importance of considering the interests of fans, customers, and partners above all else.
With his characteristic blend of pragmatism and forward thinking, Cuban’s views on the league’s involvement in international competitions reflect a strategic mindset aimed at maximizing the league’s commercial potential while safeguarding its assets. His insights continue to spark discussions on the intersection of sports, business, and global competition within the basketball community.
Dallas Mavericks’ Mark Cuban Gets Real on NBA Participation in the Olympics
Just recently, the Mavericks owner revisited his old views in light of the Olympics being held in Paris. In a tweet he posted on his official X account, the Mavericks owner stood by his opinion on what the league should do.
The Olympics are a business. First and last.
I’ve always been against NBA players playing in the Olympics. We should put on our own World Cup and treat the Olympics like Soccer does. https://t.co/RrABlkNFtjhttps://t.co/vWiLnEAEh2https://t.co/Rtc5z2bKEt https://t.co/OwF4kH576K

Since 2004, Team USA has exerted its dominance over other countries on the global stage. This year, the LeBron James-led squad is seeking to continue that trend by attempting to win the gold in Paris.
It remains to be seen whether the Mavs owner’s views will gain momentum and actually become a reality down the line. For now, though, the whole world will be keeping their eyes on the United States to see if they can emerge as the tournament’s top winner.
