The Utah Jazz are out of contention for a spot in the 2025 NBA Playoffs. It’s a conclusion many have made a long time ago, as Utah is still in a rebuilding phase, which means the team is showing symptoms of a tanking squad — like having stars or key players on load management.
Such was the case recently for stretch big man Lauri Markkanen, whom the Jazz opted to make unavailable for a March 5 game versus the Washington Wizards on the road.

The NBA later deemed that as a violation of the league’s player participation policy, and as a consequence, the Jazz were slapped with a fine of $100,000. However, the league said that the penalty was also due to repeated DNPs by Markkanen.
That is a hefty cost to pay, and the Jazz could be subjected to a bigger fine if they violate the policy again. Another violation this season by the Jazz would burn a $250,000 hole in their pockets.
Utah Jazz lose to Grizzlies in Markkanen’s return

After getting hit with the $100k fine, the Jazz declared Markkanen available to play for Wednesday night’s road game against the Memphis Grizzlies, perhaps out of fear of shelling out more money.
Markkanen played 28 minutes against the Grizzlies, scoring 14 points on 5-for-14 shooting from the floor while adding six rebounds. His presence on the court didn’t matter to the Grizzlies, though, as Memphis came away with a 122-115 victory while the Jazz dropped to 15-51 and saw their losing skid extend to seven games.
