Even though NBA big man Victor Wembanyama is going up against more formidable opponents, like the United States and Canada, his team has the advantage of having the homecourt for the Olympics. As such, the San Antonio Spurs big man got real on having that benefit in his country’s pursuit of the gold.
In an impressive Olympic debut, Wembanyama showcased his formidable skills, guiding France to a compelling 78-66 victory over Brazil in the Paris Olympics opener. Standing tall at 7’4″ with an eight-foot wingspan, Wembanyama left spectators in awe as he delivered a stellar performance on both ends of the court.

The San Antonio Spurs player demonstrated his versatile prowess with 19 points, including a commanding 14 in the first half, along with nine rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Despite some missed opportunities at the free-throw line, shooting 4-for-7, Wembanyama’s impact was undeniable, emerging as a dominant force for the French team.
Amidst a roster of experienced players and Olympic medalists, the 20-year-old phenom stood out as the standout performer, earning praise for his offensive prowess and defensive prowess. His coach, Vincent Collet, noted Wembanyama’s initial nerves leading up to the game but commended his maturity and growth as he embraced the Olympic stage.
With a supportive home crowd filling the arena, Wembanyama’s electrifying performance, including gravity-defying dunks and crucial defensive plays, solidified his position as a key player for France as they embark on their medal quest at the Paris Olympics. The young talent’s impact reverberated throughout the game, setting a high standard for his future performances in the tournament.
San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama Gets Real on France’s Homecourt Advantage for the Olympics

After the game, Wembanyama revealed France’s secret weapon and one of the primary factors why they won over Brazil. In an article posted on Basketnews, the Spurs big man said it was the home crowd that helped them get the dub.
“It exceeded them by far,” Wembanyama told Eurosport about his expectations for the Games. “I’ve never experienced 27,000 people cheering for us, cheering for me. It gives so much strength, it’s incredible.”
“I would say it is a good start. I would say we did all the job we could do tonight, but there’s still so much to do,” Wembanyama continued. “[We should be] capitalizing more on our momentum, having less ups and downs, especially downs, and overall being a more wise team.”
Wembanyama and the French national team will face Japan next in the Olympics. The latter, meanwhile, lost to Germany with a score of 97-77.

It remains to be seen how far the San Antonio Spurs top rookie last season will go in the Olympics. In any case, a lot of basketball around the world will be eager to see how Wemby will perform on the global stage.
