The Atlanta Hawks are not planning to miss out on potential opportunities for the upcoming trade deadline, and new buzz in the rumor mill points to them looking at their starting center Clint Capela as a tradeable name.
In a report by NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Hawks are allegedly looking to shop Clint Capela around, with the intention of making their backup center a new part of their core team.
As per the report, the Atlanta Hawks are allegedly looking to manage their trade options for the upcoming deadline in February 2025, and Clint Capela has been a name on top of the list. Capela has a contract with the Hawks worth $22.27 million that is about to expire in the coming offseason.
Per the report, part of the decision to consider Capela for trade was the fact that the Hawks are planning to rely more on Onyeka Okongwu, who has been the team’s backup center thus far, with Capelas as the starting center.
Capela has seen a steady decline in his game minutes in the past several seasons. For this season, Clint has an average of 23 minutes per game, the third-lowest game minutes he has seen his entire career.
Atlanta Hawks Head Coach: Developing Identity “Key for Long-Term Success”
If there is one thing about the Atlanta Hawks this season, it is that they have been playing decently well. They even made it to the semifinal stage of the NBA Cup, despite ultimately losing to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Touching on their highs and lows, Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder believes that the team is starting to form an “identity,” which is something he believes could be beneficial for everyone in the long term.
“We were so banged up early and I thought we stuck together but there was also kind of the beginnings of an identity,” Snyder said in an interview. “That is the ultimate representation of who you are and that’s the culture in my mind so the games that you are describing, I think the common denominator is we were really competitive.”
At one point this season, Snyder and the Hawks suffered through four straight losses. However, they had their high moment, too, with the longest streak of six wins.
The Atlanta Hawks currently sit 7th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 14-13. They rank 9th in the league for points per game at 116.2, but have struggled with defense, allowing 118.7 opponent points per game.
