NBA Trade Rumors: Ja Morant Swap With Trae Young Explained

With the NBA Playoffs heating up and a Luka Doncic blockbuster trade still fresh in everyone’s minds, the league might be bracing for another major shake-up—this time involving Ja Morant.

The Memphis Grizzlies have dropped two straight games in their first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, and with a possible sweep looming, trade whispers surrounding Morant have started to grow louder.

Just a few months ago, no one thought Doncic would leave Dallas. But February proved one thing: in today’s NBA, no player is untouchable.

On Tuesday, popular X user Zodiac GM, known for analyzing team dynamics through astrology, resurfaced an old tweet suggesting a Ja Morant–Trae Young trade between the Grizzlies and the Atlanta Hawks. His updated caption? “Both franchises are at a crossroad.” The idea quickly gained traction among fans.

Meanwhile, Sam Amick of The Athletic added fuel to the fire earlier this month. He revealed that Morant was especially close to former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, who was let go in late March.

“He was on Team Taylor, if you will, all the way until the end,” Amick shared on FanDuel’s Run It Back. “He didn’t like the offense. That is something we can definitely say… He was not enjoying the evolution of his role.”

Despite Memphis insisting that Jenkins’ firing won’t impact Morant’s future with the team, their playoff struggles suggest otherwise. And over in Atlanta, the Hawks are facing questions of their own after failing to make the playoffs altogether, falling short in the play-in against the Miami Heat.

A Morant–Young swap may seem far-fetched, but it might be the kind of reset both stars need.

Colin Cowherd believes there’s a better star in Memphis than Ja Morant

Meanwhile, sports commentator Colin Cowherd offered a spicy take on The Colin Cowherd Podcast, claiming Anthony Edwards has already surpassed Morant.

“Every time I watch Ant, every year, I see a better player, and I don’t with Ja Morant,” Cowherd said. “Ant works on his craft.”

And it’s hard to argue with results. While Morant’s Grizzlies are down 0-2, Edwards’ Timberwolves are holding their own in a 1-1 series with the loaded Lakers, with Game 3 set for Friday.

It’s early, but the future in Memphis might be heading for a major shake-up.
